BRAND DESIGN BY RUTLAND ONLINE
Liz was asked to present a pitch for a full rebrand of a small chain of hair and beauty salons.
Key considerations from the brief included:
- Creation of a brand story to reflect the owner’s heritage and values
- Integrating new beauty treatments offering
- Attracting younger clients whilst not alienating the existing older client base
- Communicating the owner’s commitment to staff development and flexible working
- Short name, not necessarily associated with hair and beauty
- A recognisable symbol in the logo (example given, Nike tick)
Liz researched the owner’s name and Scottish background and came up with a rough idea for the story and design. She then worked closely with Rebecca who developed these ideas into striking and distinctive designs.
‘Seath was first used as a surname among the descendants of the ancient Scottish people known as the Picts. It was a name for a person who shared some of the qualities attributed to a wolf’ Ref. houseofnames.com
‘ ‘Wolf is a symbol of guardianship, ritual, loyalty, and spirit.’ Ref pure-spirit.com
‘In its purest form, it [Celtic knoy] stands for eternal life. The one continuous line stands for unity and oneness of spirit.’ Ref ancient-symbols.com
My research into the name Seath uncovered some really interesting history.
Seath is an ancient Scottish name that means ‘wolf-like’. It was first identified back when wolves still roamed the Scottish highlands.
I thought about how this could be incorporated into a design, and decided on a Celtic knot motif.
Together, the wolf and the Celtic knot represent a spiritual interlacing of two powerful symbols.
The owner’s name was perfect for the brand. It met key criteria in the brief:
- A brand story to reflect the owner’s heritage and values
- Communicating the owner’s commitment to staff development and flexible working
- Short name, not necessarily associated with hair and beauty
- A recognisable symbol in the logo
And so, the name is SEATH
All that was left to do was to come up with a tagline that would work with the logo to communicate what the business does. After much thought and some consultation, I decided on…
HAIR, BODY & SOUL
Armed with a story and design idea, I met with Rebecca to expand the concept further.
I left if to Rebecca to work her magic. And she did…

This is where the story ends. Unfortunately the business owner decided not to proceeed with the pitch, so we weren’t able to present our concept.
However, I feel it demonstrates well the thought processes and work that goes into a Rutland Online branding pitch.
